These counselors are health care professionals with graduate training in medical genetics and counseling.

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute's genetic counseling services include:
- Collection of personal, maternal & paternal family histories
- Assessment of personal & family history for individualized risk calculations
- Recognition of cancer family syndromes
- Education about the development of cancer & genetics
- Selection of the appropriate genetic test or alternative to testing to ensure informed decision making
- Interpretation of test results
- Discussion of management options
- Referrals for medical consultations about individualized care & clinical research trials if appropriate

If you feel you are at high-risk for cancer or that genetic testing may be of benefit, ask your primary care doctor if a referral for genetic counseling is appropriate for you.
